Retrograde
A stretch of time when a planet appears to move backward against the stars, seen from Earth.
Nothing actually reverses. Earth and the other planet are both moving, at different speeds; when Earth overtakes an outer planet on the inside track, that planet appears to trace a loop backward — the same way a car you pass on the motorway seems to slide rearward.
So retrograde is a matter of viewing angle, not of force. Worth saying plainly, because a lot of writing treats it as something being done to you.
The frequency differs enormously by planet. Mercury: three or four times a year, about three weeks each. Saturn: once a year, about four and a half months. Neptune spends nearly half of every year retrograde. "X is retrograde" is therefore a much rarer statement for some planets than others.
